Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting, September 10, 2026
Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting, September 10, 2026
Attendance
Councillor Grace Whitlock (Ward 4), who represents the City on the committee, joined six resident members. The City's Accessibility Coordinator attended to support the meeting and answer questions. All members arrived on time and the meeting began with a moment of silence for community members affected by recent severe weather.
Delegations
A resident from Benchlands spoke about the need for more accessible curb cuts near the transit stops on Benchlands Drive. They shared photos of uneven pavement that makes it hard for wheelchairs and strollers to navigate safely. The committee noted the request and added it to the staff review list for the upcoming street repair schedule.
Reports and decisions
- Winter Sidewalk Clearing Priorities. The committee reviewed the current snow-clearing schedule for sidewalks in older neighbourhoods. Members discussed how delays on side streets affect seniors and residents with mobility aids. They recommended that the City clear main routes first, before side streets, and publish a clearer map for the public. Carried.
- Tamsin River Trail System Accessibility Audit. Staff presented a draft report on ramp gradients and surface conditions along the trail. The committee approved the draft for public comment and asked for a follow-up meeting in November to review final results. Carried.
- 2026 Budget Consultation Feedback. Members shared resident concerns about transit fare increases and the need for more accessible waiting shelters. The committee endorsed the feedback package for Council and asked staff to include a timeline for shelter installation. Carried.
- Transit Stop Signage Updates. The committee proposed installing high-contrast, tactile signage at all major stops by spring 2027. The motion was defeated as the cost estimate exceeded the current accessibility fund. Members agreed to revisit the proposal next year with a phased funding plan.
By-laws
No by-laws were passed. The committee recommends changes to Council, which holds the final authority on all by-laws under the Municipal Act, 2001.
Adjournment
The meeting ended at 4:15 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for October 2026. You can view the full agenda and past minutes on the Accessibility for council meetings page.
