Untidy property bylaws

Keep your property tidy and free of hazards. Learn what the by-law covers, how to report a nuisance, and potential fines.

What the by-law covers

The City of Wrenford uses the Property Standards By-law 2019-112 to make sure all properties are safe, clean, and well-maintained. A tidy property protects your health, keeps your neighbourhood looking good, and prevents pests or accidents.

Rules for keeping your property tidy

You must store items on your property so they are not visible from the street or neighbouring yards. This includes:

  • Loose garbage, bags of leaves, and yard waste
  • Bottles, cans, cardboard boxes, and packaging
  • Household furniture and appliances
  • Automobile parts and machinery
  • Refrigerators and freezers left outside must have their doors removed or be locked
  • Building materials must be stacked neatly in an orderly way. You must be able to show that construction or a renovation is actively taking place, has started, or is planned soon.

Nuisance and safety rules

A property becomes a nuisance when it harms the health or safety of neighbours, or stops people from enjoying their own yards. The following are not allowed:

  • Accumulation of offensive materials, animal remains, or animal waste
  • Standing water, open ditches, or anything that breeds mosquitoes
  • Dust, smoke, or strong odours that travel to neighbouring properties
  • Dilapidated vehicles parked on private property unless they are stored inside a garage or shed

How to report an untidy property

If you see a property that is unsafe or poorly maintained, you can file a complaint. We do not accept anonymous reports, so please have your name and contact information ready. You can report a nuisance by:

  • Calling 311 (if you are inside city limits) or 519-555-0100
  • Using the Wrenford 311 mobile app
  • Visiting the By-law Enforcement office at Wrenford City Hall

When you report an issue, please have the exact address and a clear description of the problem ready. If you use the app, adding photos helps our officers investigate faster. All reports are kept confidential.

Fines and penalties

By-law officers will visit the property to give the owner a chance to clean up the area first. If the property is still untidy after the deadline, the owner may face a fine.

  • First offence: $150.00
  • Second offence within one year: $300.00
  • Third offence or more: $500.00 plus daily penalties until the issue is fixed
