Downtown streetscape design
Welcome to the official archive for the Downtown streetscape revitalization project. This page serves as the central hub for all architectural plans, public feedback summaries, and design specifications approved during the 2020 and 2021 planning cycles. We believe that an engaging public realm is essential for a thriving community, and these documents reflect our commitment to creating a safe, accessible, and beautiful downtown core.
The initial design phase concluded in early 2020. During this period, our engineering and planning teams worked closely with the Downtown BIA to develop concepts that balance pedestrian safety with commercial accessibility. The final approved plans, dated March 15, 2020, outline the installation of new permeable paving, enhanced lighting fixtures, and widened sidewalks along King Street and Main Avenue. These changes were designed to accommodate increased foot traffic while maintaining clear pathways for emergency vehicles and service access.
We value the input of our residents and business owners. Between January and February 2020, we hosted three public consultation sessions where community members could review preliminary sketches and submit comments. The feedback received has been compiled into a summary report, which is available for download below. Key suggestions included the addition of more seating areas, improved drainage solutions for the low-lying sections near the river, and better signage for parking zones. All these elements have been integrated into the final construction documents.
For business owners in the area, it is important to note that the streetscape work required temporary adjustments to [[Downtown parking | Downtown parking]] access. While these restrictions have been lifted, please ensure you are aware of current regulations regarding [[Outdoor patio permit | Outdoor patio permit]] expansions, as the new sidewalk widths may affect existing configurations. If you are planning renovations to your property, remember that you must apply for a [[Sign permit | Sign permit]] and a [[Facade improvement assistance program | Facade improvement assistance program]] application if eligible, to ensure your exterior changes align with the new aesthetic guidelines.
All architectural drawings, including site plans, utility maps, and landscape details, are provided in PDF format. These files are large, so please allow a few moments for them to load. If you have questions about the design or need clarification on specific by-law requirements related to the new streetscape, please contact our Planning Department at 519-555-0100 or email [email protected]. We are here to help you navigate the changes and make the most of our revitalized downtown space.
