Vehicle for hire and taxi licences

How to apply for, renew, and comply with vehicle for hire and taxi licences in Wrenford.

About vehicle for hire licences

All taxis, ride-sourcing vehicles, and other for-hire vehicles picking up passengers for a fare in Wrenford must be licensed through the Business Licensing Office. The only exception is when a passenger is picked up outside the city limits and dropped off in Wrenford. Operating an unlicensed vehicle may result in enforcement action under the Vehicle for Hire By-law 2024-088.

Recognising a licensed vehicle

Licensed Wrenford for-hire vehicles must display the following at all times:

  • A valid plate decal on the rear bumper.
  • The brokerage or driver name and vehicle number on the exterior.
  • A working fare meter (for taxis).
  • An electronic payment system.
  • A safety camera or dash cam.

Taxi plate licences

The City issues two types of plates:

  • Regular Taxi Plate Licence (TPL) for standard vehicles.
  • Accessible Taxi Plate Licence (ATPL) for wheelchair-accessible taxis.

Plates are owned by the City. You can get a plate through a Council-initiated draw or by transferring a plate from a current holder at the Business Licensing Office. To apply for a draw, you must have a plan to open a brokerage or operate as an independent driver owner.

Office hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Address: Room 104, Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street, Wrenford, ON N4Q 1A1.

  • Complete a criminal record check and vulnerable sector screening by the Wrenford Police Service.
  • Pay the application fee.

Brokerages must be licensed to dispatch vehicles. If your dispatch office is home-based, you also need a home-based business licence. Broker licences require a standard business licence application and a $400.00 annual fee.
