What is a home-based business?
A home-based business is a trade, profession, or occupation that operates from your home. Your home is the primary use of the building, and the business is a secondary use. This does not include remote work jobs where you simply use a desk or computer at home for an employer.
Before you apply
Review the Business Licensing By-law 2021-033 and the Zoning By-law 2016-040 to make sure your business fits the rules. You can find these on the Find a by-law page. If you live in a secondary suite or rental unit, you must get the property owner's approval first.
Requirements
Location and space
The business must be carried out entirely inside your home. You can store business materials in a garage or shed. The business can occupy up to 33 per cent of your home's total floor space, or 30 square metres, whichever is less.
Employees and customers
You can have up to two non-resident employees working at your home at any one time. A maximum of three customers are allowed at a time by appointment only. Visits must be between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, or 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
No external changes
Nothing on the outside of your home can show that a business is running. You may put up one identification sign if it meets the city's sign rules. You cannot change the exterior appearance of the building.
Noxious effects
Your business must not produce offensive noise, odour, light, vibration, smoke, or heat that bothers neighbours.
Child care
Home-based child care is managed by the province. If you are opening a child care home, visit the provincial government website for licensing rules.
