Who does not need a Wrenford business licence
Most businesses operating in Wrenford need a municipal business licence under Business Licensing By-law 2021-033. However, some activities are exempt because they are temporary, online-only, or fully regulated by the Province of Ontario or the federal government. This page lists those exemptions and tells you what approvals you will need instead.
Temporary and visiting businesses
If you are a contractor, tradesperson, or service provider working in Wrenford but your main office is outside the city, you do not need a municipal licence if you will be here for less than thirty consecutive days. You must register your visit with the Licensing Office when you arrive. If your work extends beyond thirty days, you must apply for a short-term business licence before continuing.
Online-only and remote businesses
Businesses that sell goods or services exclusively over the internet and do not maintain a physical storefront, warehouse, or delivery depot inside Wrenford do not require a municipal licence. You are still required to collect and remit applicable provincial and federal taxes, and you must follow the Consumer Protection Act for online transactions.
Agricultural and farm gate sales
Farmers and agricultural producers selling their own products directly from the property where they are grown or raised do not need a municipal business licence. This includes roadside stands, farm gate sales, and pick-your-own operations. You must still comply with Tamsin Valley Public Health food safety guidelines and any applicable provincial agricultural regulations.
Provincially regulated activities
Some businesses are licensed entirely by the Province of Ontario. If your primary activity falls under these categories, you do not need a separate municipal licence. You must hold a valid provincial licence or registration.
- Liquor and cannabis sales: Governed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and the Lotteries and Gaming Control Act.
- Real estate and securities trading: Licensed by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario.
- Insurance and pension services: Regulated by provincial and federal financial bodies.
Volunteer and non-profit activities
Registered charities and non-profit organizations that do not sell goods or charge fees for services are exempt from municipal business licensing. If a non-profit begins selling merchandise or charging admission to events, it must apply for a business licence. Contact the Business Licensing Office for guidance on charity events and fundraising permits.
What you still need
Even if you are exempt from a municipal licence, you may still need other approvals:
- Provincial or federal licences: Check with the relevant provincial ministry or federal agency.
- Site Alteration By-law 2022-071: If your business involves construction, excavation, or grading, you may need a site alteration permit from the Planning & Development department.
- Sign permits: Any exterior signage requires a Sign Permit under the Traffic and Parking By-law 2014-075.
- Occupancy and fire safety: All commercial spaces must meet the Ontario Building Code and receive a fire safety inspection from the Wrenford Fire Rescue.
