Apply for a short-term rental licence

Learn how to register your property as a short-term rental in Wrenford to ensure compliance with city by-laws and receive your operating licence.

Apply for a short-term rental licence

If you plan to rent out your home, apartment, or secondary suite to visitors for short periods, you must register with the City of Wrenford. This licence ensures your property meets safety standards and contributes fairly to local services. Without a valid licence, you cannot legally operate a short-term rental in our community.

Who needs a licence?

You must apply if you are renting out your entire property or a private room for fewer than 28 consecutive days. This applies to homeowners, landlords, and property managers. If you are renting out your primary residence for 28 days or longer, you do not need this specific short-term rental licence, though standard residential tenancy laws still apply.

What you need to apply

Before you begin the application process, please gather the following information and documents. Having these ready will speed up the review process significantly.

  • Property details: The full address of the rental unit and the legal description from your property deed.
  • Owner information: Your full name, contact number, and mailing address. If you are using a property management company, include their details as well.
  • Safety compliance: Proof that your property meets the Ontario Fire Code requirements. This includes working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and a clearly marked emergency exit plan.
  • Insurance: Confirmation that you have commercial or specialized short-term rental insurance coverage. Standard homeowner policies often do not cover commercial rental activities.
  • Neighbourhood consultation: If your property is in a dense residential area like Downtown or Riverside Flats, you may need to confirm that your zoning allows for short-term rentals.

How to submit your application

You can complete the application through the Business Licences portal. Navigate to the Short-Term Rental Registration form on the website. Fill in all required fields accurately. Incomplete applications will be returned to you, which may delay the issuance of your licence.

Once submitted, your application will be reviewed by the Licensing Department. This process typically takes five to ten business days. If additional information is required, a staff member will contact you using the phone number or email address provided in your form. Please ensure your contact details are current.

Fees and payment

The application fee is non-refundable. Payment must be made electronically through the secure booking page linked within the application form. We accept credit cards and debit cards. Do not send cash or cheques by mail.

Important deadlines

You must apply before you begin accepting bookings. Operating without a licence is a violation of the City of Wrenford’s Municipal Code and can result in significant fines. Licences are issued annually and must be renewed by December 31st of each year. Set a reminder for yourself to renew on time to avoid any lapse in your operating status.
