Why licence your dog
Every dog in Wrenford must be licensed under the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law 2018-063. A licence gives your dog a permanent stainless steel tag. If your pet goes missing, the tag is the fastest way to reunite you. The fees also help fund the city's spay and neuter program.
How to apply or renew
You must renew your licence every year before December 31. Licences are valid for the calendar year. You can apply or renew in these ways:
- Online: Use the Wrenford Business Portal to create an account and pay with a credit card or debit.
- In person: Visit the Business Licences desk at Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street. We accept cash, cheque, or card.
- By mail: Send a cheque payable to "City of Wrenford" with the renewal form to P.O. Box 1234, Station Main, Wrenford, ON N4Q 1A1.
Annual fees
Fees are set out in the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151. A discount applies if you pay by March 31.
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| Altered dog (spayed or neutered) | $45.00 |
| Unaltered dog (intact) | $90.00 |
| Replacement tag | $15.00 |
Aggressive dog licence
If your dog has bitten or attacked a person or another animal without being provoked, it is considered aggressive under the by-law. You must apply for a special aggressive dog licence. Animal Services staff will contact you after an investigation.
Aggressive dogs must wear a red octagon-shaped tag, similar to a stop sign, so people know to keep their distance. You must also follow specific conditions, which may include keeping your dog on a leash in public, using a muzzle, or posting warning signs at your home. The annual fee for an aggressive dog licence is $225.00.
If your dog completes a behaviour modification course and has no incidents for 12 months, you may apply to have the aggressive licence removed. Email [email protected] to start the process.
Service dogs
A service dog is trained to help a person with a disability. You must provide a copy of the provincial service dog licence card when you apply. Service dogs are exempt from the altered or unaltered fee structure but still require registration.
