Accessing the city archives

Guidelines for residents and researchers to view historical records and photographs in the Wrenford city archives.

Accessing the city archives

Wrenford’s history is preserved in the city archives, located in the Downtown branch of the public library. Whether you are researching family roots, working on a school project, or looking for historical context for a heritage property, you can view these materials in person. Please read the following guidelines before your visit.

Who can visit

The archives are open to the public. You do not need to be a resident of Wrenford to access the collection. However, all visitors must register at the front desk and present a valid photo identification. Researchers from outside the city may need to apply for a reader’s card in advance.

What you can view

The collection includes city by-laws, council minutes from 1950 to the present, historical photographs, maps, and local newspapers. Many items are fragile and cannot be handled directly. Staff will provide copies or digital scans for most documents. For large maps or architectural plans, you must use a provided viewing table.

Booking an appointment

For most materials, you can visit during regular library hours. However, if you need to view specific items such as original blueprints or rare photographs, please book an appointment at least two business days in advance. This allows staff to retrieve the materials from secure storage. You can book online or call the main line at 519-555-0100.

Rules for handling materials

Only pencils are allowed in the reading room. Bags, coats, and briefcases must be stored in the lockers provided at the entrance. Food and drink are strictly prohibited near the archives to protect the documents. If you have questions about a specific item, ask a staff member before you begin your research.

If you are interested in the history of a specific building, you may need to check the Heritage register search to see if it is designated. You can also explore the Our history page for a general overview of Wrenford’s development. For those who wish to contribute to the collection, see the Donate to the archives page. If you are planning a renovation on a heritage property, review the Heritage alteration permits requirements first.
