How the federal census works

The Government of Canada conducts a national census every five years under the Statistics Act. The most recent data was released from the 2021 census, and the next federal count will take place in May 2026. The federal questionnaire asks detailed questions about your household, including income, language, education, and household composition.

You will receive a secure link or paper form by mail. If you do not respond, a census worker will visit your home to finish the survey. All information is kept strictly confidential and used only for statistical purposes.

How we use census data

City planners, transit engineers, and community services teams use census results to decide where to build new roads, how often to run the bus, where to locate child care centres, and how to plan for an aging population. Ward-level data helps your local councillor understand the specific needs of your neighbourhood.
